Discover Messenia's monuments, from prehistoric to post-Byzantine times. People, myths, history, environment, and culture in perfect harmony

Projects
Between 2011 and 2015, the Ministry of Culture carried out an extensive programme in Messenia aimed at the protection and promotion of cultural heritage. In total, twenty-three projects of restoration, conservation, enhancement, and reconstruction were implemented on an equal number of monuments and archaeological sites within the prefecture of Messenia, with an overall budget of €28,579,120. Sites of outstanding importance, such as the Palace of Nestor, the new Archaeological Museum of Pylos, as well as churches, castles, monasteries, and towers, were restored and revitalized to exemplary standards, offering significant testimony to the continuous cultural achievements of the people of Messenia from Prehistory through the Byzantine and Post-Byzantine periods. The implementation of these projects was made possible through funding from the National Strategic Reference Framework (NSRF) 2007–2013, co-financed by Greece and the European Union.
