General Directorate of Antiquities and Cultural Heritage
The Ephorate of Antiquities of Messenia is a regional service of the General Directorate of Antiquities and Cultural Heritage of the Ministry of Culture. Its headquarters are located in Kalamata, and its responsibilities and obligations cover the entire Prefecture of Messenia.
Messenia is a geographical region that experienced significant growth and prosperity in antiquity, as evidenced by the hundreds of surviving monuments scattered across the area, dating from the prehistoric period through the post-Byzantine era. Excavations, which began as early as the first half of the 20th century, have brought to light unique finds, the most important of which are housed in the permanent collections of its museums (Archaeological Museum of Messenia, Archaeological Museum of Ancient Messene, Archaeological Museum of Pylos, Museum of Chora, Museum of the Fortified Complex of the Mourtzinon/Troupakidon Family in Kardamyli). These collections serve as links in the chain of the museum narrative, through which each visit becomes a distinct journey into history.
We hope that our online presence will complement our work by both disseminating information regarding the cultural heritage of our country — and particularly of Messenia — and keeping you informed about the activities of our Ephorate, while also facilitating communication with us. In the following pages, you will find key information about our monuments, archaeological sites, museums, and other activities.
