Early christian basilica, Ancient Messene

A three-aisle basilica has come to light to the south of the theatre and has been associated with the early Christian city quarter at this location. It comprises a narthex (antechamber), a large central nave, two narrower side aisles and a round apse at the eastern end. The roof was made of wood.

The aisle columns were topped by marble capitals over which rose semicircular arches. The basilica was constructed in the mid- 6th cent AD, on top of an earlier roman building and a circular structure. The basilica was built partly with reused material from older constructions. A hoard of the 6th cent. AD bronze coins was found under its floor.
