Temple of Eileithyia and the Kouretes

The small cult building, that was identified with the temple of Eileithyia and the Kouretes comprises a shallow prodomos and the cella. It was built on a terrace, along with a Γ- shaped construction. On the latter were found remains of animal sacrifices and evidence of sacrificial pyres, similar to those in the cult of Artemis Laphria in Patra. The cult of the Kouretes is testified in inscriptions; it appears that it was introduced in Messene as it was associated with the salvation of Zeus from Kronos and his worship as Zeus Ithomatas.
