Faneromeni monastery in Petrovouni

The Faneromeni monastery is located on an imposing hill east of Kardamyli, near Petrovouni, in a site that offers unhindered view of the entire Messenian gulf. The complex is ruined, its form having been severely altered over time, as a result of successive modifications caused by the expansion of the village. What survives today is the katholikon, a two-storey orthogonal building to the southwest that was the oil mill, a small orthogonal structure to the north and the gate between the church and the north building. The katholikon, dedicated to Zoodochos Pigi, is a domed, single naved, barrel-vaulted basilica, built with uniform sized porous blocks, in isodomic style masonry, probably during the second Venetocracy (1685-1715). The date is based on evident western influences and morphological affinities with the nearby katholikon of the Karaveli monastery and with Agios Spyridon in Kardamyli.
