Metamorfosi Sotiros in Fagrianika Mileas

Metamorfosi Sotiros (Transfiguration of Christ) is the parish church of Fagrianika, in mountainous Milia, located at the central square. It is a domed two-column cross-in -square church, built in the 13th century, as indicated by the wall painting fragments and the brick decoration of the faces.
The monument underwent extensive modifications and alterations during the post byzantine period. Its western part dates to the 18th century, while the characteristically local bell tower was built in the early 19th century, influenced by similar structures of the Ionian islands. The engraved and relief decorative elements of a strong folk character, attest to the craftsman’s skill and ingenuity. The inscription above the porch mentions the year 1808, probably referring to the construction of the bell tower. The monument, along with the bell tower are typical examples of the church-building tradition of Mani.
