Metamorfosi Sotiros in Langada

Metamorfosi Sotiros (Transfiguration of Christ) at Langada lies in the village square of Langada. It is a domed, four-column cross-in-square church and dates to the 14th century. Its eastern side was modified in the 16th century. A single-lobe arched bell tower rises at the end of the west wall. It is built in the cloisonné system with ample ceramoplastic decorative elements.
The masonry and the plastic layout of its surfaces are indicative of the architectural trends in the churches built in Laconia and Messenia after the mid- 13th century. A number of morphological features in the church are of gothic influence (window of the north cross arm, windows of the prothesis and diakonikon), integrated in the byzantine architectural tradition. The interior is decorated with 14th century wall paintings.
