Sanctuary of the river – god Pamisos in Agios Floros

The Swedish archaeologist Mattias Natan Valmin excavated at the beginning of the last century a small sanctuary next to the springs of Pamisos river, dedicated to the worship of the river god Pamisos. It comprised a small doric temple, consisting of a prodomos with two columns in antis and a cella. Within it there was an offering pit (opening), from which the pilgrims’ offerings ended into the river. A ramp connected the temple with the altar. The worship of Pamisos was confirmed by inscriptions and a number of small votive offerings. Pamisos was usually depicted in the form of a bull and was worshiped as epekoos (recipient of prayers and supplications) and as a healer, mainly of children. Numerous miniature vases, bronze and clay figurines, lamps and other votive offerings document the function of the sanctuary from the 7th century BC to the 3rd century AD.
