Ancient fortification at Stylari, Kopanaki

Part of a fortification with a tower is preserved on the hill plateau of Stylari, northeast of Kopanaki. Built with large-sized blocks in the isodomic system, the fortification is reminiscent of its counterpart in ancient Messene, dating to the 4th cent. BC. The embrasures are visible at the top of the tower.
This small fortified acropolis has been associated with settlements of ancient Messenia, mentioned in ancient sources, such as Polichni and Dorion, but their identification remains doubtful. It is a fact, however, that the fort did control both the passage from eastern Messenia to Triphylia and the Ionian, as well as the passage to the north, to Figaleia, thus it could be connected with the border dispute between the Messenians and the Arcadians.
