Cave of Nestor at Voidokoilia

The so-called cave of Nestor is located on the north side of the peninsula of Koryphasiο with the medieval ruins of Palaiokastro castle and has a panoramic view of the Voidokilia bay, the Ionian Sea and the Messenian hinterland. It consists of two entrance chambers and a main hall. Two hearths, stone tools, many animal bones and pottery fragments of various periods were found inside. The cave was used systematically during the Neolithic period (6th-4th millenium BC), less intensively during the Early Helladic period and again systematically from the end of the Middle Helladic and during the Mycenaean period. Short-term use is also recorded in the Geometric, Classical and Hellenistic times. The inhabitants of the cave may have been engaged in farming and storage practices, as can be seen from the abundance of pithoi and pots for domestic cooking and everyday use, without ruling out its simultaneous or occasional use as an animal corral.
