Vigla in Loutsa, Foinikounta

The round vigla (watchtower) is located on the rocks of the beach east of Loutsa, at Foinikounta beach. It has visual contact with the castle of Methoni and was part of the defensive system of the castle, as a vantage point towards the east and as an intermediate post in the communication network between Koroni and Methoni. The building is most probably a Venetian construction of the 13th or 14th century.
It is rather well preserved, with an outer diameter of 5m and a height of 8.6m. It is built with rubble masonry with interlaid bricks. Its broad base is founded on the rock. It comprised a ground floor and an upper level, separated by a wooden floor. The flat wooden roof was surrounded by orthogonal crenellations, some of which are still preserved.
