Subproject 3, entitled “Improvement of the Kyparissia – Filiatra – Pylos – Methoni National Road, Section Filiatra – Gargalianoi – Archaeology”, was launched by the Ephorate of Antiquities of Messenia on 16 March 2023, with the recruitment of one archaeologist, one accountant, and two technical workers.

Since the commencement of works, excavation activities have been systematically monitored, and on-site inspections have been carried out along the entire length of the project to record and identify areas requiring further archaeological investigation.

Following the detection of scattered ceramic fragments throughout the project area, test trenches were excavated to a depth of up to one metre, leading to the identification, documentation, collection, and cataloguing of ceramic material.

Additionally, the Ephorate oversees:

  • the cleaning, widening, and partial redirection of the stream at the Langouvardos Bridge;

  • the supervision of land and greenhouse expropriations, where demolition of structures and other obstacles has taken place;

  • the construction monitoring of a level junction and a box culvert with wing walls, aimed at improving the flow of the Koutsouveri stream beneath the road axis;
    and other related activities.
