Agia Sofia in Gournitsa

The church of Agia Sofia stands on an imposing hill, east of Kardamyli at the outskirts of the Agia Sofia (Gournitsa) settlement. Built at the site of an ancient quarry, it oversees the town of Kardamyli and the Messenian gulf. Its architectural type is a domed, two-column cross-in-square. It is built with hewn blocks of the local poros, while the lower part of the walls is built with rough stone masonry with immured tiles, possibly being an earlier construction phase. Inscribed dates (1604, 1714) can be seen in several blocks. The dome has a tall 12-sided refined drum, elaborately decorated, and a terraced roof. The church’s interior is decorated with wall paintings. According to the founding inscription, above the entrance it was built in 1630 and decorated in 1700. The original built templon (screen or iconostasis) was later replaced by a wooden one, datable to the second half of the 18th cent. or to the early 19th cent.
