Agioi Apostoloi in Kalamata

The church of Agioi Apostoloi is one of Kalamata’s most beautiful monuments, in the heart of the historic centre. It was associated with the beginning of the liberation struggle against the Ottomans in 1821. Its current appearance is the result of the joining of two churches. The original one, to the east, dates to the 12th century and belongs to the type of a domed free cross. It is built in the cloisonné system and has rich ceramoplastic decoration. Fragments of wall paintings preserved in the interior probably date to the 17th century.
Due to an increase of the congregation during the second Venetocracy (1685-1715), a domed basilica was added to the west of the original core and a bell tower at its north-eastern corner. These additions are built with rectangular porous blocks in the isodomic system. The original church became the altar and the western addition was the nave. The church went through extensive damages in the 1986 earthquake, and a large scale restoration project was implemented afterwards.
