Agioi Theodoroi Prasteiou (old katholikon)

The old katholikon of the monastery of Agioi Theodoroi, is located just outside Prasteio or Proasteio, to the east of the village. It is a compact, domed cross-in-square church and it dates to the mid- 13th cent. Built with cloisonné masonry, it has several ceramoplastic brick decorative features, such as dented bands, rhomboid and criss-crossing bricks. Those features echo influences from the architectural tradition of the Despotate of the Morea. Two layers of wall paintings have been preserved, dating to the 13th and 17th centuries. A depiction of the throned Agios Nikolaos has been revealed and conserved on the built templon (screen or iconostasis). It has been dated to the 13th cent., an indication that the church was originally dedicated to St Nicholas, Bishop of Myra.
