Agios Charalambos in Kalamata

The byzantine church of Agios Charalambos is located northeast of Kalamata’s city centre, in the city cemetery. A part of the byzantine church (12th or early 13th century) is preserved, attached to the eastern side of a disproportionately large 19th century annex that is now the main cemetery church.

The byzantine church has two storeys and was initially domed. The ground floor has an almost square plan, slightly larger than the floor and belongs to the two-column cross-in-square type. The upper floor, of the same type, must have had a dome, which has not survived, due to the construction of the newer church. The sanctuary is a triconch, with the central apse having a hexagonal exterior and a semicircular interior. The rich decoration of brick elements in the outer surfaces of the floor is of great interest.
