Agios Nikolaos in Aipeia

The ruined cross vaulted church of Agios Nikolaos in Aipeia can probably be dated to the first half of the 13th century. A four-column porch, now in ruins, was built at its north side and was roofed by a gothic style groin vault. A small chapel was added shortly afterwards, in contact with the north side of the original church. It was built with ashlar masonry that has incorporated many western architectural features. Agios Nikolaos in Aipeia, along with Agios Georgios in the same village and Agios Georgios in Androusa consist a group of monuments that is valuable for the study of the architectural trends in the Peloponnese after the establishment of the Achaea Principality in the early 13th century and the settlement of western crusaders in the region. Ιn 2011 repair work was implemented at the ruined south church, in order to face its urgent structural problems. Two plain graves were found inside the chapel, probably dating to the 13th century.
