Agios Nikolaos Prasteiou

The church of Agios Nikolaos lies in the middle of Prasteio or Proastio village and was the parish church of the village. It is a domed, two-column cross-in-square church. The spacious narthex and the imposing bell tower – 17.5m high – are later additions. The well-preserved wall paintings of the interior date to the 18th cent. A dedicatory inscription at the north pillar bears the name of the painter Anagnostis Seleberdakis of Koutifari. Three construction phases can be traced: the original cross-shaped core of the main church can be attributed to the second half of the 14th cent. The narthex was added in the 16th cent. in order to meet the increasing liturgical needs; the bell tower was built in a third phase, in 1789.
