Acropolis of Elliniko in Desyllas area

The fortified acropolis at the site “Elliniko” is located in the area of ancient Andania, southeast of the village of Desyllas. The acropolis wall extends on the plateau of the southernmost peak of a small mountain range. It consists of two parallel rows of large-sized stone blocks, the space between which has been filled with small-sized stones.
The wall, stronger on the western side, is reinforced at intervals with bastions and towers, while the gates are narrow and well built, and are suitable for defending against attackers. There are no traces of a settlement within the acropolis, which suggests that it was a fort. It can possibly be connected with the safeguarding of the border areas of Messenia and may be related to the border dispute between the Messenians and the Arcadians over the regions of Andania/Endanika and Pylanika, following the foundation of Messene and Megalopolis in 369 and 370 BC respectively.
