Castle of Pera in Paniperi

The castle of Pera in Paniperi occupies an imposing hill with a panoramic view of the Messenian gulf and of the passes to the Venetian territories of Pylia. Perhaps it can be identified with Castro Leone, which is mentioned in historical sources since 1409. It has an almost square plan, following the contour lines. It is built with rubble masonry, with brick fragments in the joins. The steep eastern side is interrupted by two orthogonal towers, while the strong tower of the western side was probably a donjon (inner tower or keep). The entrance gate was located at the west side. House remains can be seen inside the castle, as well as a barrel-vaulted cistern and possibly the ruins of a small church.
