Castle of Voutaina

The castle of Voutaina lies in ruins on top of a hill at the western edge of the named village. It occupies a strategic site, which commands one of the passes leading to the gulf of Kyparissia. The castle dates probably to the Francocracy (Frankish period). The only mention of it is found in the versed “Chronicle of the Tocco”, which recounts the events of the period 1375-1425, focusing on the homonymous family of nobles from Kephalonia. The castle is included in a 1463 list of castles under Venetian rule, with the name “Vutina”. The fortification follows the contour lines, protecting the ridge of the hill. Scant remains of the small ruined castle have survived, including the ruins of a tower at its north-eastern corner, an arched opening and a built barrel-vaulted cistern, possibly of square plan.
