Monastery of Sidiroporta at Karveli

The monastery of Sidiroporta lies at the western reaches of Mt. Taygetus, not far from the settlement of Karveli. One of the most historic monasteries of Messenia, its foundation dates to the year 1586, according to archival sources and to the monastery’s code. Now abandoned, the monastery was dedicated to the Assumption of Virgin Mary. It comprised the katholikon, which is better preserved, three auxiliary buildings to the church’s north, which have undergone major alterations, the remains of a cistern and of a ruined cell wing to the southwest. The katholikon is a single-aisle domed basilica. A crudely carved apotropaic stone head has been placed above the main entrance to the west. A single-lobed bell tower rises at the western end of the north side. The dome has a unique stepped layout, i.e. the roof is arranged in two steps, one superimposed to the other. The ceramoplastic decoration of the dome is made up of a zig-zag pattern. The interior walls are covered in plaster.
