Cemetary of chamber tombs in Ellinika, Antheia

At the site “Kastroulia” next to the site “Ellinika”, two burial tumuli of the Middle Helladic period (2000-1600 BC) have been excavated, while the extensive Mycenaean cemetery at Ellinika includes monumental chamber tombs dug in the soft rock of the area. They are large in size with long passageways, monumental facades, square chambers with carved benches, side chambers and elaborate burial pits. Most notable among the finds are a gold signet ring depicting a minoan bull leaping scene, gold jewellery, stone vessels, clay figurines and numerous ceramic vessels.
The monumental character of the tombs together with the prestigious and luxurious grave goods, suggest that they would have been used for the burials of local high-ranking officials in the 14th and 13th centuries BC. They have been associated with the cities of Antheia and Aipeia mentioned by Homer. Grave goods from the cemetery are exhibited in the Archaeological Museum of Messenia in Kalamata.
