Fortified complex of the Kapetanakides in Trikotsova (Soterianika)

The fortified complex of the Kapetanakis family, who were kapetanioi (rulers) of the Zarnata region, is located in the abandoned settlement of Trikotsova, on Petrovouni hill, near Soterianika. The complex was founded by George Kapetanakis; the fact that the name of the chief mason, Nikitas Mandrapilios, who designed it, is also preserved, is a unique and very interesting clue to the history of its architecture. The small fort has a trapezoid ground plan, following the contour lines. It is enclosed by a wall, reinforced with round towers. Defensive features incorporated in the towers include machicolations and bretèches (openings for shooting or throwing objects at the attackers below). The arched main entrance is opened on the eastern side, where the kapetanios’ tower is also located.
Two orthogonal wings, north and west, included living quarters, storage and other minor rooms. The small family chapel, single-aisle and timber roofed, was dedicated to Prophet Elias. This small fort was built in the late 18th/ early 19th century, as a typical example of the idiosyncratic social and architectural tradition of Mani.
