Fortified complex of the Mourtzinoi in Ano Kardamyli

The fortified complex of the Troupakides – Mourtzinoi looms over Ano Kardamyli, being one of the stations of the Mani Museum Network. The complex is built on a rocky hill that commands the Messenian gulf and the overland road from Mani to Kalamata. It belonged to one of the most powerful clans of Exo Mani (outer Mani), who were ruling the region – known as the kapetanate of Androuvista – for over 200 years.

It comprises three defensive enclosures, within which were built a three-storey fortified residence (ontas), a cookhouse and cistern, a five-storey defensive tower, an oil mill a smithy and various minor buildings, as well as the family chapel of Agios Spyridon. This is a single naved barrel-vaulted basilica of the second Venetocracy (1685-1715), with ancient and byzantine sculpts immured in its walls and an impressive bell tower, decorated with various stone reliefs in folk style. The first buildings of the complex were erected in the late 17th century, while constant remodelling and additions were taking place until the early 19th century.
