Dourakis tower in Kastania

The tower of kapetan (local ruler) Dourakis is located at the central square of Kastania. It is a late 18th century building, the seat of the kapetania, and at the same time the symbol of the economic, military and political might of the family during the second ottoman occupation. The monument is arranged in a three-partite fashion. It consists of the tall defensive tower, a two-storey annex to the east and a stone-built staircase attached to the south side of the annex.
The four- level tower has a square ground plan, a barrel-vaulted basement, and a defensive parapet over the hip roof. The fourth level has four jutting cylindrical turrets supported by corbels shaped as human heads. The current appearance of the orthogonal two-storey building is the result of successive modern alterations.
