Roman villa and bath in Petalidi

On the beach of Petalidi (ancient Korone), at the location of Loutra and about 1.5 km north of the modern settlement, a luxurious, four-room bath of Roman to early Christian times has been excavated. It consists of a cold (frigidarium) and a hot bath (caldarium) with heated floors. Some of the walls of the bath had marble revetment, while the floor was covered with clay or marble slabs. It communicated with part of a Roman villa with ten rooms and a three-room building decorated with mosaic floors.

A few meters to the northeast of this complex, extensive structures of Roman times have been uncovered. They were developed close to the coast and include baths with hypocausts, living quarters, workshops, auxiliary rooms, and burials in tile-roofed graves. These luxurious complexes indicate the establishment of wealthy owners with lucrative business activities in the area.
The findings of the excavations include a large quantity of pottery, bronze coins, architectural elements, glass objects, and sculptures, some of which are on display at the Archaeological Museum of Messenia in Kalamata.
