Roman villa in Desyllas

A Roman villa has been excavated between the villages of Desyllas and Filia. Only two rooms of the villa have been revealed with colourful mosaic floors, now in the Archaeological Museum of Messenia in Kalamata. The first one depicts a young charioteer driving a chariot led by two panthers; the name Ευηνίων (Evinion) is written above them. Depicted in the medallion of the second mosaic is the bust of a young man wearing a wreath. The villa has been associated with the sanctuary of ancient Andania, where mysteries (rites of initiation) were held. The revival of the ancient mysteries became possible after the foundation of Messene in 369 BC and was a constituent element of the Messenian nation.
