Budget:

€200,000.00

Description:

The Castle of Androusa occupies the northeastern edge of a low plateau on the western fringe of the Messenian plain. Its initial construction phase dates to the mid-13th century AD, during the Frankish period of the Peloponnese. The restoration of most of the fortress was completed under the ESPA 2010–2014 programme, greatly enhancing the preservation of the site.

The north-west tower, one of the castle’s key defensive structures, presents the most severe structural problems. Within the framework of the current project, restoration and stabilization works are being carried out, including:

  • Repair and reinforcement of the masonry with stone infills and stitching,

  • Grouting and repointing with compatible materials,

  • Replacement of decayed wooden tie-beams, and

  • Consolidation and cleaning of the structure to ensure long-term stability.

These works are designed to ensure the structural integrity and preservation of the tower, as part of the broader protection and enhancement programme for the monument.

Benefits:

The implementation of the project will eliminate the structural risks currently threatening the tower and contribute to its complete scientific documentation.

Upon completion, the tower and the broader site will be safe, functional, and accessible to visitors, while its architectural and aesthetic restoration will highlight the historical and cultural value of the monument.

The project enhances the historical identity of the area and contributes to the cultural and touristic development of Messenia by delivering to the public a fully functional archaeological site, destined to become an attractive destination for visitors and an important point of reference in the region’s medieval heritage.
