Description

Within the framework of Subproject 3: “Provincial Road Rizomylos–Koroni, Section: Tzane Bridge – Kalamaki Exit – Archaeology,” of the project “Provincial Road Rizomylos–Koroni, Section: Tzane Bridge – Kalamaki Exit,” the Ephorate of Antiquities of Messenia conducted archaeological excavations at the acropolis of ancient Koroni — a city founded, according to written sources and archaeological evidence, around 1365 BC by Boeotian settlers, which flourished during the Hellenistic and Roman periods.

The excavation focused on the section of the proposed road axis that passed within the designated archaeological site of the Acropolis (Government Gazette 780/B/29-12-1981), and brought to light significant antiquities, mainly architectural and funerary remains, related to the fortification and urban fabric of the ancient and early Byzantine city.

Benefits

The excavation revealed new data concerning the fortifications, burial customs, and topography of ancient Koroni.
According to a decision of the Central Archaeological Council, the excavated remains will be preserved in situ, making them visible and accessible to visitors, thus contributing to the development of cultural tourism in the area.

In addition, the findings of the excavation will be presented to the scientific community through publications in reputable academic journals, further enhancing knowledge of the archaeological and historical landscape of Messenia.
